Keep Your Pets Safe This Holiday Season

keep-your-pets-safe-this-holiday-season-

The holidays can be a fun and festive time for both people and pets. However, it’s important to remember that your furry friends need extra care during the holidays as there are certain things that can be dangerous to them. Here is a short guide on pet hazards to avoid this holiday season. And remember, if your pet encounters any of these hazards and needs veterinary care, Burlingame Family Pet Hospital is here for you.

Toxic Foods and Plants

The holidays are full of delicious treats, but not all of these foods are good for your pets. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic can all be toxic to cats and dogs. Also, keep in mind that many common holiday plants—including holly berries, mistletoe, poinsettias, and lilies—are poisonous if consumed by animals. Make sure you keep these items out of reach of your pet or better yet, eliminate them from the home altogether.

Festive Decorations

Holiday decorations provide lots of festive cheer but can also pose risks to your pet’s safety. Tinsel is a particular hazard for cats as they find it irresistible and may ingest it, which can cause serious digestive problems or even death due to a blockage in the intestines or stomach. Other decorations, such as lit candles, should also be kept away from pets as they may burn themselves on hot wax or knock over the candle causing a fire hazard. If possible, opt for battery-operated lights instead of traditional lightbulbs which can heat up when left on for long periods of time leading to possible burns or fires if touched by curious animals.

Stressful Situations

Another way to ensure your pet’s safety during the holidays is to make sure they have a quiet place where they can retreat away from any stressful situations, such as loud music or large gatherings with strangers entering their space without warning. If your pet becomes overwhelmed when visiting family members who aren’t used to having animals around, it might be best to leave them at home in the safe environment they know so well rather than take them with you when you go visiting relatives during the holidays.

Conclusion

The holidays are an exciting time filled with festivities, but it's important for pet owners to remember that what's fun for us may not necessarily be safe for our four-legged friends! With some careful planning ahead of time and attention paid during celebrations, you can help keep your pets safe this holiday season while still enjoying all the joys this special time has to offer.
